HOME ENTERTAINMENT FOR KIDS AND SPANISH LANGUAGE LEARING

23 OCT 20

Chances are high that you and your kids are homebound during the COVID-19 pandemic that has impacted the world. If you’re stuck at home and wondering how to keep your kids entertained, we have plenty of ideas for you. Keep in mind that this could also be a great time to improve on their Spanish learning skills.

Creativity thrives when children complain that they have nothing to do. It’s the perfect time for you to throw something new into the mix. Kids have so much energy so you’re going to need to keep your wits about you during these “trying times.” The key is to keep them as busy and intrigued as possible. Now is the perfect time to suggest a few new activities or brush up on existing ones.

Rewatch favourite movies

This is the perfect time to let your kids rewatch their favourite movies in Spanish. The idea is to keep your children positive and motivated during these difficult times, so make sure that they are watching feel-good movies. The point is to use this “down time” to pick spirits up.

This is also a great opportunity for your kids to watch Spanish movies in an effort to improve their Spanish language skills. There are a number of appropriate movies out there that both kids and adults will love. Movies are a great way to improve both listening comprehension and vocabulary.

Reread Books

Once again, this isn’t just about rereading books in the native tongue. It’s also an excellent time to get your kids into reading some Spanish books. To make things a little more entertaining you could even have your child act out there understanding of the book or certain sections. Think dress up, props, and building a setting.

Online Gaming

There are tons of fun online games out there to keep kids entertained. You could encourage your child to play a Spanish learning game. Many of these games are organized by skill level which means that you can find the perfect one depending on how advanced your child is in Spanish learning.

Some good options for beginners are Translation Games, Spanish Word Toss, the Memory Game, and Memory Matching.

Aside from specific Spanish games, you could also try to find a Spanish version of your kids favourite game, such as Mario Kart. Since they will already know how the game works it may help them to associate certain things in Spanish.

All of the current gaming consoles come with online networks, which means that your child can play with friends and family - wherever they are.

Board Games

Of course, online games aren't the only option, there’s always board games. Playing is one of the best ways for children to learn, regulate emotions, and socialize with others. There are plenty of Spanish games for kids that can help with language learning. The best part is that many of these games are fun for parents too.

A lot of games use language in context which means that you learn sentences and phrases, not just words. Furthermore, many games include pictures - making them perfect for beginner learners.

Ultimately, playing board games will allow you to have fun together as a family, but can also be useful in practicing Spanish.
