BREAKING DOWN CULTURAL BARRIERS WITH LANGUAGE TRAINING

11 MAY 21

To meet the demands of today's world economy, more businesses are turning to a global workforce. Each of the diverse employees has a different set of knowledge that contributes and offers a diverse perspective to the organization’s projects. The advancement of technology in recent years has contributed to this increase in diversity of employees and even clients due to the ease of communication by videoconference between different countries.

The challenge with such a diverse workforce is knowing how to foster an inclusive work atmosphere in which all workers can achieve their maximum potential. Plus, when in such a diverse setting there can be some cultural and language barriers among employees. Language and cultural barriers make it difficult to provide guidance, clarify preferences, or provide performance input to others with whom you cannot easily interact with.

Therefore, when managing such a global team, it is important to know that effective communication can be thwarted by cultural and language barriers. A solution to combat this is language training.

Cultural Barriers in the Workplace

As mentioned before, thanks to a global economy, cultural barriers in the workplace become more common every day. What exactly are cultural barriers? Cultural barriers are obstacles to cross-cultural contact within a business. When people from different cultures interact in different ways, such as by speaking different languages, holding. different cultural values, or using different gestures and symbols, their cultural differences can become barriers to workplace success. Offering language training can help combat this as it helps employees collaborate efficiently and creates a more unified team.

Language training in the workplace

Providing language training is an excellent solution to break down cultural barriers and a great way to teach non-native speakers the basic language requirements for the business. Words, sentences, alerts, or specific business jargon can aid them in their duties. Lessons may also be beneficial for all workers when dealing with foreign markets. Furthermore, language training is also beneficial by itself, as it:

Helps promote diversity and inclusion

Providing language training to your staff demonstrates your commitment to diversity and helps to foster an inclusive atmosphere in the workplace. By allowing them to learn new languages such as Spanish, you give them the ability to learn about different cultures.

Promotes better workflow

Employees who are eager to understand foreign languages become more empathetic toward others. And it is for this reason that language training will help the diverse employees deal with one another while they develop closer working partnerships and get to know one another on a more personal basis. Employees can effectively coordinate with one another and establish great dynamics in the workplace as a result of this.

Opens international business opportunities

Your current or future clients may be diverse too and equipping the workforce with language training assists not only the employees but also the company itself. Language training helps acknowledge cultural differences and diversity which in turn improves interactions and communication with potential clients and customers.

Final Thoughts

Any organization can have cultural challenges that must be addressed regularly so that work does not suffer and staff cooperation can be improved. Offering language training to your employees helps them collaborate more effectively and prevents common stumbling blocks such as cultural barriers in the workplace or with potential clients.
